Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce weighs in on search for new City Manager

LETHBRIDGE – The Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce is hoping its members, along with other businesses and citizens will be consulted, as City Council moves forward with a committee created to outline the parameters for hiring a new City Manager.

In a statement issued Thursday (Nov. 1), the Chamber writes “It is reasonable to state that the hiring of the next City Manager is the single most important responsibility that our Council faces during this term, and it is a decision made more complicated by the fact that every individual in town has a vested interest in the selection that is made.”

The letter also emphasizes that “the influence of this one individual on every aspect of civic life cannot be overstated.”

Outgoing CAO, Garth Sherwin recently gave notice to the city, indicating he was retiring effective January 3, 2018. Sherwin worked for the city for more than 32 years, and was appointed City Manager in 2008.

The same statement from the Chamber also explains it is a “critical opportunity in the life of our city, and council has a chance to be visionary in their selection by hiring for what the community hopes to become in the future.”

At Monday’s Council Meeting (Oct. 30), former Senior Administrator Kathy Hopkins was appointed as the Interim City Manager, while an ad hoc committee made up of Mayor Chris Spearman and councillors Belinda Crowson, Joe Mauro and Jeff Coffman will begin developing the process for choosing a new CAO.
