Housing starts drop in November, but remain higher for year

Dec 8, 2017 | 7:57 AM

LETHBRIDGE – Housing starts in Lethbridge took a nosedive in November, compared to a year earlier. But 2017 is still trending higher.

Numbers released by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC) indicated 34 single homes were started during the month in the Lethbridge census metropolitan area, and six multiples, for a total of 40. That’s down 60 per cent from Nov. 2016.

The total, however, for the first eleven months of 2017 is still 17 per cent above the year-to-date total last year, with 442 single homes and 260 multiples, for a total of 702.

Calgary and Edmonton remain on pace to beat last year as well, though Edmonton had a lower November. Red Deer had a strong month but still trails 2016, and Grande Prairie and Medicine Hat are also behind last year’s pace. And numbers for Wood Buffalo (Fort McMurray) continue to reflect the rebuild following last year’s fires.
