LETHBRIDGE –  Those curious about the renovations going at the Yates theatre in Lethbridge are invited to Lethbridge City Hall March 13, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the foyer.

There, a 3D model, along with conceptual drawings of the theatre, will help the public visualize the changes currently taking place.

At Monday’s meeting, Facility Services Manager Conrad Westerson told City Council that front-of-house renovations should be completed by July and are so far on budget.

Front-of-house renovations include updated entranceways, washrooms, administration and ticket areas, the addition of elevators, upgraded mechanical and electrical systems, a fire sprinkler system, catwalk relocation, seating and roof replacement and updated performance audio and visual systems, along with new paint and flooring.

The $13.4 million project is so far on time and on budget, despite additional asbestos remediation issues, which pushed back the opening several months.

According to Westerson, back-of-house renovations, including those to dressing rooms and the green room, won’t be completed until the end of the year. The upgrades will allow the building to meet current building code, accessibility and functional requirements.

The Genevieve Yates Memorial Centre was built in 1966 and is home to Lethbridge Musical Theatre and New West Theatre. It’s also used for school performances and dance festivals.
