New signage, parking kiosks coming to downtown Lethbridge

May 1, 2018 | 1:55 PM

LETHBRIDGE –  Over the next several weeks, those visiting downtown Lethbridge will notice new signage and kiosks being placed in 170 locations to replace the old parking meters.

Once installed, users can use coins or a credit card in a “pay-by-plate” user system. They can also monitor the amount of time left by downloading the new smartphone app.

Weather permitting, the new system is expected to be operational in late May.

Hoods will then be placed over the old meters and marked as ‘out of operation.’ According to the city, 95 per cent of the old metres are 25 years old, showing their age and can not be re-programmed to take new coins or other payment methods.

The City says once everything is working, users can park downtown, walk to the nearest kiosk, select the zone they’re parked in, enter their plate number and pay.

There will not be any change to the current parking meter rates.

Anyone who would still like to test out the system can do so at City Hall.
