Lethbridge man charged after robbing a Mac’s Convenience Store in Claresholm

CLARESHOLM – RCMP have laid charges against a Lethbridge man following a late-night robbery of a Mac’s Store in Claresholm.

Police say around 1 a.m. on May 1st, they were dispatched to the robbery after the attendant at Mac’s was approached by a man wearing a mask who demanded the keys to his vehicle parked outside.

The suspect is alleged to have threatened to shoot the attendant and a customer who was in the store.

According to police the keys were given to the suspect and he then locked the victims in the store bathroom before fleeing in the stolen car, but no weapon was produced, and the victims weren’t injured.

RCMP members from Fort MacLeod and Claresholm tracked the vehicle down travelling southbound on Highway 2 at a high rate of speed north of Fort MacLeod. Police pulled the driver over, and he was arrested without incident.

As a result, 27-year-old Darren Daniel Ethier has been charged with eight criminal code offences including:

– Robbery with threats of violence.
– Theft of motor vehicle.
– Possession of Stolen property over $5000.
– Utter Threats to cause bodily harm.
– Two counts of forcible confinement.
– Failing to stop/report a collision.
– Refusal of roadside screening device.

Ethier appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was released from custody. He will appear in Fort MacLeod Provincial Court on May 30 at 10:00 am.
