LETHBRIDGE – An army of youth volunteers will be leaving highway ditches spotless this weekend.

The annual highway cleanup is Saturday, May 5. Teams of volunteers wearing orange safety vests will be out collecting garbage from along provincial highways between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Members of non-profit groups register to volunteer and are paid by Alberta Transportation. Amounts range from $55 -$100 per kilometre, based on proximity to urban centres. Safety training and adult supervision are requirements to volunteer.

Last year more than 17,000 people took part, from groups such as 4-H, Scouts, Girl Guides, schools, church groups, service clubs, and sports teams. Altogether they picked up more than 53,000 bags of trash, from more than 13,000 km of highways.
