Mormon support for gay marriage gradually grows

SALT LAKE CITY – A new survey shows Mormons are gradually becoming more accepting of same-sex marriage, fueled by the views of younger church members.

But the survey released this week by the Public Religion Research Institute reveals that Mormons in the United States still lag behind national support for same-sex marriage and behind Catholics, Muslims and Jews.

The survey found 40 per cent of Mormons support gay marriage, up from 27 per cent in 2014.

Among Mormons 18-29, the acceptance is 52 per cent.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who are 65 and older have the lowest rate of support at 32 per cent.
