LETHBRIDGE – The jobless picture for the region that includes Lethbridge improved for a second straight month in April.

Numbers released Friday, May 11 indicate the unadjusted, three-month moving average for the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat area improved to six per cent, from 6.5 per cent in March and 6.9 per cent in February. Unlike the March increase, which saw employment decline, there was an increase of 400 jobs in April.

The Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region now has a lower rate than the Edmonton (6.8 per cent, unchanged) and Calgary (decreased to 7.5 per cent) regions. It’s even with Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake, but higher than Camrose-Drumheller (four per cent, a slight increase), Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House/Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River (rising to 5.9 per cent), and Red Deer (5.1 per cent, slightly higher).

Alberta’s unemployment rate rose to 6.7 per cent. While there were 1,800 fewer jobs, more significant was the increase in the size of the labour force, by 7,600.

Sectors that saw increases in employment in April included construction, manufacturing, professional services, and administration. There were declines in trade, finance/real estate, culture/recreation, and accommodation/food service.
