Historic ranch welcoming visitors for summer season

LONGVIEW – A historic ranch northwest of Lethbridge has officially begun welcoming visitors for the summer season.

The Bar U Ranch National Historic Site received its designation in 1989. Established in 1882 as one of the first large ranches in what is now southern Alberta, it became renowned for breeding cattle and Percheron horses.

The site showcases the experience of cowboy life amid a large collection of original buildings. Among them are a blacksmith’s shop, saddle maker, stables, post office, and cookhouse.

Activities are planned for this summer under the theme of “Rhythm of the Land.” The first is planned for the long weekend, May 19-21, demonstrating spring seeding. Later there will be haying demonstrations, binding and stooking, and harvest.

Regular Parks Canada admission fees have been restored this year, at the same prices as 2016. However, youth 17 and under can get in for free during 2018.

The Bar U Ranch is near Longview along Highway 22, between Lundbreck and Calgary.
