Bridge near Scandia blocked after fatal crash

SCANDIA – A deadly crash has blocked the Highway 36 bridge over the Bow River between Vauxhall and Brooks.
Brooks RCMP were called at around 4:30 a.m. Saturday, June 9 to investigate a collision between a semi and a pickup truck on the bridge just south of Scandia. STARS Air Ambulance also responded to the scene.
One person was killed in the crash. A second person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The semi was hauling an empty tanker trailer. However, the tractor unit leaked diesel fuel into the Bow River. Area fire departments were on the scene using booms to attempt to contain the spill and were in touch with Environmental Services as well. The size of the spill wasn’t known.
