Youth to be included in Soldier’s Plot rededication

LETHBRIDGE – More than a century after it was first established, the Soldier’s Plot at Mountain View Cemetery is being rededicated Sunday, June 10 following a restoration effort.

The General Stewart Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion hopes to have one youth present for each of the 120 graves in the plot. It’s part of the effort of passing the torch of Remembrance, organizer Glenn Miller said in a news release.

The first Soldier’s Plot first opened in 1917, with the responsibility of beautification and maintenance given to the Sir Alexander Galt chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E.) It reached its capacity of 120 graves in 1945, and a granite post and wrought iron gate were installed at that time.

Among the dead who are buried there are Lethbridge citizens who died before leaving for overseas duty in the First World War. The roll includes five members of the Royal Air Force, two from the Royal Australian Air Force, and three U.S. servicemen.

The work that needed to be done included replacement of faded headstones or I.O.D.E. foot markers, new landscaping, the planting of poppies and trees, and repainting the gate. The work concluded in 2017.

The restoration effort included partnerships with the City of Lethbridge, the Last Post Fund, and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

The ceremony is at 11 a.m. Sunday at Mountain View Cemetery on Scenic Drive South. Afterwards, the I.O.D.E. is hosting a reception at City Hall.
