Hurricanes issue statement on injury of players

LETHBRIDGE — Details are minimal but the situation is significant enough that the Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club has issued a statement regarding an incident involving players, Jordy Bellerive and Ryan Vandervlis; along with alumnus, Matt Alfaro. 

 “All three players are currently being treated in hospital for various injuries sustained in the incident. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the families at this time. On behalf of the Hurricanes, the players’ families, and teammates we ask you to respect the privacy of all those affected.

The Hurricanes’ focus and priority is on the health of the players injured and will have no further comments at this time. More information will be provided as it becomes available. 

 We ask for your thoughts and prayers for the players, their families, and their teammates.”

According to Global TV Lethbridge, “Sources have confirmed all three were injured in a fire incident at a stag party they were attending.  One of the three is in critical condition.

The National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins posted an update Sunday moning via Twitter on the condition of Bellerive:

“The Pittsburgh Penguins have been in direct contact with prospect forward Jordy Bellerive since he was injured in an incident on Saturday night. Assistant general manager Bill Guerin has spoken with Bellerive, who is in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery.”

It’s believed the player in critical condition is Ryan Vandervlis. He and the others were attending a bachelor party for former team mate Tyler Wong.

Cochrane RCMP are investigating the incident and confirm that around 11:45 on Friday (June 15), they, along with Rockyview Fire and EMS were called to the Bearspaw area of Rockyview County, 10 km east of Cochrane. 

The initial investigation has determined an explosion was the result of a substance being placed into a fire-pit that. Three people who were in the proximity of the fire-pit suffered burn injuries.   They were taken to a Calgary hospital, for treatment of their injuries.
