Calen Addison selected 53rd Overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL Entry Draft

DALLAS – The National Hockey League dream came true on Saturday, June 23, for Lethbridge Hurricanes defenceman Calen Addison.

Addison was selected in the second round, 53rd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins, becoming the highest selected Hurricanes’ player in the NHL Draft since 2009 when Carter Ashton was taken in the first round, 29th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The 18-year-old from Brandon, MB, becomes the 15th player in Hurricanes history to be selected in the first or second round of the NHL Draft.

Addison, the 5’11”, 178-pound defenseman recently completed his second season in the Western Hockey League with the Hurricanes appearing in 68 regular season games registering 65 points (11g-54a) along with 53 penalty minutes.

He led all ‘Canes defenseman in scoring and finished third in team scoring behind fellow Penguins prospect Jordy Bellerive and Los Angeles Kings prospect Brad Morrison. He added another 19 points (7g-12a) along with 20 penalty minutes in 16 post-season contests helping the Hurricanes to their second straight Eastern Conference Championship Series appearance.
