LONDON — Canada’s Peter Polansky and Brayden Schnur posted victories Monday on the opening day of the men’s singles qualification round at Wimbledon.

Polansky, seeded eighth in the qualification draw, beat Taiwan’s Tsung-Hua Yang 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 while Schnur, from Montreal, dispatched Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo 6-4, 7-5.

Filip Peliwo of North Vancouver, B.C., was eliminated after dropping a 7-5, 6-2 decision to No. 28 Ernests Gulbis of Latvia.

Polansky, from Thornhill, Ont., was scheduled to play a men’s doubles qualification match later Monday at the All-England Club. Polansky and American Mackenzie McDonald were to face third-seeded duo Andre Begemann of Germany and Yasutaka Uchiyama of Japan.

Four Canadians are entered in the women’s qualification draw, which is scheduled to begin Tuesday.

Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., will take on No. 18 Lin Zhu of China and Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., will meet American Grace Min. Montreal’s Francoise Abanda will face Germany’s Antonia Lottner and No. 20 Carol Zhao of Richmond Hill, Ont., will play Italy’s Deborah Chiesa.

The women’s doubles qualification draw will be released Tuesday. Tournament organizers will also announce the seedings Wednesday and the singles draws Friday.

World No. 26 Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., and No. 32 Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., are on the men’s singles entry list with No. 93 Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver. Montreal teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime is skipping the grass-court season to focus on clay.

Raonic pulled out of last week’s Queen’s Club tournament due to a right pectoral strain but appears primed to return at Wimbledon.

“Focused on the next one soon @Wimbledon #MondayMotivation,” Raonic said on Twitter.

Toronto’s Daniel Nestor and Austria’s Jurgen Melzer have picked up a wild-card entry into the men’s doubles draw.

It will be Nestor’s last competitive appearance at Wimbledon. The former world No. 1 is planning to retire later this season.

Competition continues at the Grand Slam event through July 15.
