CALGARY – 40 of the country’s top junior hockey players were named to the Hockey Canada World Junior Showcase development camp on Wednesday, July 4, including a pair of Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Captain Jordy Bellerive and recent Pittsburgh Penguins draftee Calen Addison will be attending this summer’s camp in Kamloops, B.C. It will be held from July 28 to Aug. 4, and the full camp roster can be found here

“It’s a huge honour to be named as one of the 40 players to attend the camp,” Bellerive said. “Anytime you have a chance to represent your country, it’s something special. I’m very excited to see what the future holds.”

Of the four goaltenders, 12 defencemen, and 24 forwards on the summer roster, three players – forwards Maxime Comtois from Victoriaville of the QMJHL, Alex Formenton from London of the OHL, and Robert Thomas from Hamilton of the OHL – won gold with Canada’s National Junior Team at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo last January.

Brad McEwen, head scout for Hockey Canada, says the World Junior Showcase gives them an excellent opportunity to begin the evaluation process and for the staff to familiarize themselves with the players before the new season kicks off.

“We also get to see the players in competition against the teams who will be returning to Vancouver and Victoria this December. It’s a unique opportunity, and we’re looking forward to making the most of it as we kick off our journey to the 2019 World Juniors later this month,” McEwen added.

The eight-day event features Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the United States, who will combine to play 11 games. Canada will dress two squads for games against a split United States roster on July 31, before combining again as a full team to play Finland on Aug. 2, Sweden on Aug. 3, and close the tournament against Team USA on Aug. 4.

The final selection camp will be held in early December, with the 2019 World Junior Hockey Championship opening in Vancouver and Victoria on Boxing Day.

On Tuesday, July 3, Hurricanes head coach Brent Kisio was named an assistant coach on the World Junior Team coaching staff.
