TABER – A very prompt guilty plea from a 34-year-old Taber woman has resolved a case that arose just last week.

Amanda Farlette appeared in Taber Provincial Court via CCTV from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre Tuesday, July 31, admitting to a charge of break and enter to commit mischief – after the charge was amended from break and enter to commit robbery.

The Crown prosecutor explained that during the early evening hours of July 24, an elderly woman climbed into bed in her Taber home and started to read. She noticed something and looked up to see an unknown woman standing in the doorway to her bedroom. Farlette told the victim that they used to know each other and claimed she had been nice to the woman in the past, before asking for money.

Fearing for her safety, the victim started collecting change from a dresser drawer and handing it to intruder, turning over a total of $6. At one point, Farlette noticed American currency in the drawer and grabbed it, but then returned the cash when the victim asked her to.

Farlette then left the victim’s home and went to the neighbours, where the Crown said she asked for money as well, without going in.

It was noted that Farlette has committed similar crimes twice before.

After hearing a joint submission from the Crown and defence, and taking into account the very early guilty plea, the judge agreed to impose a sentence of six months in jail, followed by one-year of probation. She was also given a 10-year and lifetime ban on restricted and prohibited weapons respectively.
