LETHBRIDGE – Two Lethbridge men have been committed to stand trial on a charge of second-degree murder, following a preliminary inquiry.

After reviewing evidence provided by the Crown during the prelim for Simon Scout and Rylan Twigg and ruling that certain parts of that evidence were admissible, the judge made the ruling Friday afternoon, Aug. 3.

The two men had previously elected trial by judge and jury, and their matter will now move to the Court of Queen’s Bench later this month to set a trial date.

In the meantime, Scout also had a bail hearing scheduled for Aug. 8, as he seeks to be released again, after allegedly breaching conditions he was previously released on. Twigg also remains in custody, having not requested a bail hearing to this point.

The charges against them are connected to the 2017 death of 45-year-old Kenrick First Rider.

According to the Lethbridge Police Service, First Rider was killed on the morning of Nov. 27, 2017. Around 7:20 a.m., EMS responded to a report of an unresponsive man inside a home along the 1200 block of 9 Avenue North. Upon arrival, they pronounced First Rider dead and contacted police.

Following an investigation, LPS released a statement saying they believe First Rider had been involved in a verbal dispute with two other men, which escalated to a physical altercation that resulted in First Rider sustaining fatal injuries.

Twigg turned himself in to police that evening, while Scout was arrested the following day, thanks to tips from the public.

Police noted that the two accused were living with the victim, and that Twigg’s mother had been involved in a relationship with First Rider.
