BOW ISLAND – A tragic accident on a property near the Town of Bow Island has taken the life of an 11-year old boy.

RCMP Corporal Neil Bailey says it happened around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday evening.

“A 47-year-old male from Bow Island was operating a pay loader, and there was kind of a mechanical failure. He was having trouble and the brakes and steering failed on the loader.”

The pay loader then took a sudden and sharp turn, and hit two youths, including the boy and a 17-year-old male.

The child was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later. The other male was not seriously injured.

Bow Island RCMP, Alberta Occupational Health and Safety and the office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating.

The Town of Bow Island has posted information for families and others who are grieving. The Prairie Rose School Division and the Town have set up family counselling supports at the Community Room of the Town Office.

The Town is also offering its condolences to the Porteous and Laidlaw families, according to a statement on social media.
