CALGARY – Two Lethbridge post-secondary institutions will share in a government announcement to create more student spaces to study high-tech fields.

Programs were chosen based on demand from both students and the labour market, and the seats were added mostly to existing one- and two-year programs offering certificates, degrees, and diplomas. The province is creating 406 seats for the 2018-19 school year.

Lethbridge College will see the addition of 19 seats in Computer Information Technology. The University of Lethbridge is gaining two seats in the Masters of Science/Computer Science co-op program.

Other seats are being added in Calgary to the University of Calgary, SAIT, and Bow Valley College; and in Edmonton at the University of Alberta, Concordia University of Edmonton, and NAIT.

In a news release, the province said tech fields have seen an 8.4 per cent increase in enrolment over the past four years. During that time, disciplines including computer programming, computing science, and software engineering have recorded 30-50 per cent increases.
