Return to class includes new middle school in west Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE – New clothes and supplies are purchased, teachers and staff are prepared, and school buildings are shined up and ready to take in children for the start of another school year.

Kids trooping off to class for the first time Tuesday, Sept. 4 may need their rain gear. Environment Canada said Lethbridge has a 60-70 per cent chance of showers between the hours of 7-10 a.m. The sun should be out at least a little bit when school ends for the day.

The biggest change in Lethbridge is the addition of a new school. Senator Joyce Fairbairn Middle School at 301 Rocky Mountain Blvd. W. will take in all middle school-aged kids in west Lethbridge south of Whoop-Up Drive. The exception is an area bordered by Métis Trail, McMaster Blvd. and Temple Blvd. Those students will continue to attend G.S. Lakie Middle School.

Livingstone Range School Division has relocated its offices from Claresholm to Fort Macleod, in the G.R. Davis Administrative Building. The division’s phone number remains unchanged. A grand opening is planned for Sept. 18.

The start of school means school zone speed limits are once again in effect during the posted hours on school days. Drivers should also be aware of school buses, especially in rural areas where the buses’ flashing red lights and stop arms are in use.
