Lethbridge-Medicine Hat unemployment rate rises after five straight drops

Sep 7, 2018 | 9:16 AM

LETHBRIDGE – A five-month streak of declines in the unemployment rate ended for the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region in August.

The unadjusted rolling three-month average rate increased from 4.8 to 5.1 per cent. It was still the second-lowest of any Alberta region, behind only Camrose-Drumheller’s 4.4 per cent (down from 4.5 per cent.)

There were also declines in the three-month rolling average for Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake and Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House/Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River. Red Deer took a significant jump, from 5.6 to 6.7 per cent, and Calgary increased from 7.5 to 8.1 per cent, highest in Alberta.

The seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for Alberta was unchanged at 6.7 per cent. While the number of jobs increased by 16,000, the size of the labour force also grew by roughly the same number.

When looking at the seasonally-adjusted employment numbers for each sector, there were increases in the professional/technical and business/building/support service sectors. There was little change in any of the goods-producing categories.
