Resolution discussions ongoing in voyeurism, child porn case

LETHBRIDGE – A trial may not be necessary for an 18-year-old former University of Lethbridge student and Hong Kong national who faces child pornography and voyeurism charges.

Appearing in Lethbridge Provincial Court Monday, Sept. 10, defence lawyer David Cavilla said several resolution offers have been exchanged between himself and special prosecutor Carolyn Ayre. He was then granted an adjournment to Oct. 1, allowing more time to continue those discussions.

His client, 18-year-old Lap Kwan Yue, was charged in March of this year following an investigation by ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit.

According to ALERT Lethbridge, they were tipped off about suspicious activity at the U of L’s Centre for Sport and Wellness by pool staff and campus security. A suspect was arrested on Mar. 22 at the pool, with ICE alleging that the individual was filming inside the change room area while it was being used by a youth swim club – the participants of which were between the ages of five and 18. The investigation then led ICE to search Yue’s home, where they found and seized the electronic devices.

Yue was subsequently charged with voyeurism, possession of child pornography, accessing child pornography, and making child pornography.

In a statement from the U of L, they noted that they have rescinded Yue’s registration and prohibited him from returning to campus.
