City of Lethbridge inviting the community to view draft master plan for future Civic Common

LETHBRIDGE – Residents of Lethbridge will have an opportunity this coming week to view the draft plan for the community’s long-term vision for the Civic Common.

Civic Common is the four-square-block area that includes land occupied by City Hall south to the Civic Ice Centre as well as the Civic Field, the Yates Theatre, the Old Courthouse, the YMCA, the Fritz Sick Centre and the Lethbridge RCMP detachment.

An Open House for the Draft Civic Common Master Plan will take place on Thursday, Sept. 20 between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the City Hall foyer.

The draft Civic Common Master Plan was developed through consultation with the community over the past four months and builds on the existing planning framework for this distinctive area of Lethbridge.

The concept of a civic square was envisioned 37 years ago in the 1981 Town Square Concept Report.

This report recommended construction of a new city hall in this area as part of an enhanced civic centrepiece – a part of the vision that was realized when the current city hall opened in 1999.

The draft master plan will also be available online here starting on Sept. 20.

In April this year, a series of interactive sessions were held with stakeholders and community residents to begin forming a long-term vision for what was initially referred to as the Civic Precinct.

This initial engagement activity directly influenced the draft master plan, including renaming the plan and area to Civic Common.

The results of these initial community engagement activities were made available to the public in July and August along with opportunities for residents to provide online feedback. A final master plan is expected to be ready for presentation to City Council for adoption in October this year.

Any future decisions about uses of buildings within the Civic Common area will be made in consultation with the organizations that own or occupy them.
