Lethbridge City Administration to investigate possibility of backyard hen pilot project
LETHBRIDGE – If Kelti Baird is successful, about 100 urban chicken licenses could eventually be handed out by the City of Lethbridge. That’s about one per every 1,000 residents.
At Monday’s meeting, Baird made a presentation to city council, asking for members to consider joining cities like Red Deer, Edmonton and Airdrie, by allowing homeowners to keep up to four hens.
Currently, Bylaw 3383, which has not been amended since 1983, prohibits the raising of any kind of poultry within the City of Lethbridge. Baird believes the current bylaw does not allow for the adaptation of proper urban agricultural practices and food sustainability.
Already she says, a Facebook group created in the last week to support her idea has more than 100 members.
