Word on the Street returns to downtown Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE – A celebration of words is set for Saturday, Sept. 22 in downtown Lethbridge, even if the weather is a little chilly.

The Word on the Street Festival is set for 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the main branch of the Lethbridge Public Library, featuring nine performance stages, food and marketplace vendors, music, children’s entertainment, and free library memberships.

“The mandate for the festival is to celebrate the written and the spoken word,” explained Elisabeth Hegerat, the festival director and manager of community and economic advancement for the LPL. “That is part of what we’re all about as the public library, and about bringing people in our community together. So, it seems like a pretty good fit for us.”

She highlighted additions over the years, such as the comics/graphic novel stage, and a tipi set up by Sik-Ooh-Kotoki Friendship Society to host Indigenous cultural activities. She said everyone is excited to have Clifford the Big Red Dog and Dog Man there to entertain the kids, and she’s thrilled with the lineup of authors and presenters.

“One of the things I’m excited about as an organizer, that people might not think about, is we’ve made some more steps towards accessibility this year and we’re going to be offering live closed-captioning on our two adult author stages,” Hegerat said. “And we’ll have ASL (American Sign Language) interpreters for parts of our program as well this year.”

This is the eighth year for the event.
