LETHBRIDGE – A trial date has been scheduled for two Lethbridge men, in connection with the 2017 murder of 45-year-old Kenrick First Rider.

The judge and jury proceedings for Simon Scout and Rylan Twigg have been scheduled to run from Sept. 3 – Oct. 11, 2019. An eight-day voir dire has also been set for April of next year to examine the admissibly of certain evidence ahead of the trial, and which will be covered by a publication ban.

The two men were committed to stand trial in August on a charge of second-degree murder, following a preliminary inquiry.

According to the Lethbridge Police Service, First Rider was killed on the morning of Nov. 27, 2017. Around 7:20 a.m., EMS responded to a report of an unresponsive man inside a home along the 1200 block of 9 Avenue North. Upon arrival, they pronounced First Rider dead and contacted police.

Following an investigation, LPS released a statement saying they believe First Rider had been involved in a verbal dispute with two other men, which escalated to a physical altercation that resulted in First Rider sustaining fatal injuries.

Twigg turned himself in to police that evening, while Scout was arrested the following day, thanks to tips from the public. Scout has since been released on bail, while Twigg remains in custody.

Police noted that the two accused were living with the victim, and that Twigg’s mother had been involved in a relationship with First Rider.
