Wheat Kings’ Burzan dominates in win over Hurricanes

BRANDON – It’s not often you score four goals in the third period and still come away with an ugly loss.

But that was the cold reality for the Lethbridge Hurricanes Saturday night, Sept. 29, as they fell 8-4 to the Wheat Kings in Brandon. It came one night after they pounded Regina by the same score.

With Hurricanes starter Reece Klassen getting his first night off after playing in the club’s opening three games, the Wheat Kings took advantage of Akira Schmid early – as he made his ‘Canes debut – with Connor Gutenberg beating him 47 seconds into the contest to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Brandon’s Luka Burzan then took over – really, really took over – scoring twice more before the end of the first period. He’d go on to tally a remarkable five goals and one assist in the contest.

It’s worth noting that Schmid was pulled from the Hurricanes’ net after surrendering the first three goals, but went back in after Klassen played just 1:27 and made one save.

By the end of the second, the Hurricanes would find themselves down 7-0.

The third period was of course a significant bright spot for Lethbridge, as Taylor Ross, Jake Elmer and Jordy Bellerive all fired home goals on the power play, and Dylan Cozens added another at even strength to make it 7-4.

Burzan would cap the scoring late in the game with an empty netter to make it 8-4.

Another bright spot is that with his goal and an assist on Bellerive’s, Cozens is tied for the WHL scoring lead with 10 points through four games.

Also, despite the loss, the game still marks the end of a relatively successful three-game road trip for the Hurricanes, as they went 2-1, giving them an early 2-2 record on the season.

They now return home to the ENMAX Centre for a three-game homestand, beginning Friday, Oct. 5 against the Prince Albert Raiders.
