LETHBRIDGE – Galbraith Elementary School was evacuated as a precaution Wednesday afternoon, due to a suspected gas leak at the school.

Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Gilmore says around 2 p.m. school administration and staff noticed an odour that wasn’t typical in the building and they weren’t sure whether it may be a gas leak, or something else.

“So, always putting safety first, they evacuated the building, called emergency services to check out the facility as to whether there was a gas leak of some kind. And given the wait time for emergency services to check a building, the school proceeded to take the students to their evacuation emergency site…and that’s Wilson Middle School.”

All of the students were taken to the gymnasium, and parents were alerted about the events. Because the students left their coats and other belongings behind at Galbraith, parents were told they could come and sign their children out. Buses would pick up students at Wilson as well, at the regular time. Police, Fire and EMS all attended the scene as a precaution.

Gilmore says at this point, it looks as though the gas came from sewers lines which have since been flushed.

She says parents can expect to receive another alert either late Wednesday afternoon or sometime in the evening through an electronic voice mail message system. Emails will also be sent out, and a message will also be placed on the School District’s Website. http://www.lethsd.ab.ca/

A cause for the sewer line disruption hasn’t been established yet.
