Unemployment in Lethbridge/Medicine Hat 4.8 per cent, lowest in province
LETHBRIDGE – Unemployment in the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region was the lowest in the province in September.
Numbers released by Statistics Canada and the Government of Alberta show the unadjusted three-month moving average rate was 4.8 per cent, down from 5.1 per cent in August. The rate has now declined in six of the last seven months. One year ago, it was also 5.1 per cent.
The region that previously recorded the lowest rate, Camrose-Drumheller, took a huge jump from 4.4 to 5.2 per cent. Calgary increased slightly to 8.2 per cent; Red Deer climbed from 6.7 to 7.2. Other regions showing declines were Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House/Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River, from 5.9 to 5.2; Edmonton ticked down to 6.5 per cent; Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake was down slightly to 5.9 per cent.
Overall, Alberta’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in September was 7.0 per cent, up from 6.7 per cent in August. The size of the labour force grew by 6,800 while 2,900 fewer people were working. There was a net gain of 3,800 full-time jobs, but part-time employment was down by 6,800.
