Single vehicle collision causes power pole fire on jail road

Oct 7, 2018 | 2:40 PM

LETHBRIDGE — By Sunday morning the only visible signs of a collision on the jail road was a patch of scorched earth, a large broken sign and a Shaw cable technician working to repair a damaged utility box.

Around 8:30 Saturday (Oct 6) night, South Lethbridge residents witnessed flames and flashing lights from a fire and the emergency personnel on scene.

An eastbound vehicle on the jail road swerved off the road across from the Research centre.

The vehicle hit the ditch, grazed a power pole and then a cable box, before taking out a man-hole cover and a sign.  It then struck a power pole and burst into flames.

Another vehicle on the road pulled into a ditch to avoid the swerving vehicle and the witness called 911.

By Sunday morning, the car had been removed and a new power pole replaced the pole burned the previous night.

The 21-year old male driver was sent to Foothills hospital in Calgary via STARS. He underwent emergency surgery for multiple serious injuries.

RCMP are conducting the investigation.
