Snowy, slippery start to short work week

LETHBRIDGE – Drivers face icy, snowy roads as they head back to work and school following the Thanksgiving long weekend.

A freezing drizzle warning was lifted by Environment Canada early Tuesday, Oct. 9. However, there was the possibility of more freezing drizzle mixed in with snow Tuesday morning. The forecast said Lethbridge could expect 2-4 cm of snow Tuesday and another 2 cm Tuesday night.

Some parts of central and east-central Alberta were hit by heavier snow on the holiday Monday. Edmonton received 5-13 cm of snow, with 10-16 cm falling at Lloydminster and 23 cm around halfway between the two cities at Ranfurly.

As of early Tuesday, 511 Alberta reported nearly all highways in the Lethbridge area, from the Crowsnest Pass to Grassy Lake and from Cardston to Claresholm, were at least partly snow-covered. Some were completely snow-covered with icy sections. Volker Stevin crews were out.

In Lethbridge, the city announced shortly after 5:30 a.m. that it had lowered the speed limit on Whoop-Up Drive to 60 km/h.

Many, but not all, schools around the region had a professional development day scheduled Tuesday, which would mean no classes regardless of the weather.
