CALGARY — The Hurricanes appeared to be in a positive situation as they rolled north to Calgary for Friday night’s game against the Hitmen.

The Canes had snapped a three-game losing streak and nailed their first home-ice win on Wednesday.  With an initial record of 3-3-0-1, they were about to take on a Calgary team that was winless in six games.

The evening’s match offered potential for the Lethbridge boys. Unfortunately, the potential almost didn’t materialize once they hit the ice.

Just over six minutes in, Mark Kasterlic posted the first goal for the Hitmen, off an assist from Vladislav Yeryomenko. A mere three minutes later, it was 2-0 for the Hitmen and the Canes changed the goalie, with Carl Tetachuk making his WHL debut to relieve Reece Klassen

The only penalty during the first period went to Calgary’s Hunter Campbell – a double minor for high sticking and drawing blood from Igor Merezhko.

The period ended with the Hitmen leading goals 2-0 but, the Canes leading shots on goal 17-10.

The first net action in the second frame came off the stick of Riley Fiddler-Schultz near the eight-minute mark. The puck found the back of the Canes net but, bounced back, prompting officials to go to re-play.  Moments later, the Hitmen were up 3-0.

The Canes fought back.  At 9:22, Jake Elmer tallied his 5th of the season and put his team on the scoreboard off a pass from Noah Boyko. It took another ten minutes of play but, just a minute before the buzzer, the Hitmen struck again, taking the score to 4-1.

The final period produced a flurry of goals as the Canes fought back.  It began with the first goal of the season for Zachary Cox at 2:45, taking the score up to 4-2. The Hitmen answered with a goal two minutes and a power-play goal at the eleven minute mark, putting the score at 6-2 for the home team.

With six minutes remaining, the Canes turn on the heat. Just seconds into a power play, Logan Barlage slaps one into the Hitmen net.  He isn’t finished though. With less than two minutes remaining, Barlage posts his second goal of the night, cutting the Calgary led to 6-4.

With over a minute remaining in the period, Tetachuk leaves the Canes goal, allowing Jake Elmer to attack the ice. At this point, Jadon Joseph lays down his first goal of the season, off an assist from Danilo Palivko.

Unfortunately, the third period comeback came moments too late. Although the Canes outshot Calary 39-37, the Hitmen have their first win of the season, beating the Canes 6-5.
