Cannabis consumption allowed in Alberta’s provincial parks

LETHBRIDGE – While the rules for buying and consuming cannabis will vary in national parks, depending on which province they are located in, Alberta’s environment minister is clarifying what the rules will be in provincial parks.

Shannon Phillips says anywhere users can smoke cigarettes, they can also smoke cannabis, with some notable exceptions.

“It is still illegal to litter using cigarette butts or any cannabis filters, so please don’t do that. It is still against the law to operate a motor vehicle or any motorized vehicle while intoxicated, so please don’t do that.”

Phillips adds that any areas where smoking is also only allowed from a prescribed distance, such as playgrounds, must also be taken into consideration, and smoking at or in picnic shelters is also not permitted.

As for any retail cannabis stores showing up in a place like the Castle Park resort area where there are condos and ski rentals, it’s not likely.

“We don’t generally have a lot of commercial activity happening within our provincial parks, and certainly not any fixed roof activity happening within our wildland parks. We don’t expect to have that situation in our provincial parks.”

Retail cannabis stores are planned for Banff and Jasper. However, it’s not clear whether they will show up in the Waterton Lakes townsite.
