Take advantage of BCRC seminars without leaving the farm or ranch

LETHBRIDGE —    In the mid 70’s, Country singer Jim Stafford hit the music charts with a little ditty called the “Wildwood Weed”. A cute catch-phrase from the tune was ‘you could take a trip and never leave the fram”.

Of course, Stafford wasn’t referring to webinars and who would ever have thought that ‘wildwood weed’ would some day be legal in this country.

However, it turns out, you can still take a trip without leaving the farm but, these days, you don’t need the Wildwood weed. You just need a computer and internet access, to take advantage of the Beef Cattle Reserach Counil (BCRC) annual webinar series for cattle producers.

Stacey Domolewski, the BCRC’s Research and Innovation Coordinator, explains webinars are just like attending a conference or an event but, you do it from your own home.

“They last about an hour and you get a chance to hear from experts in a specific area.  You’ll also be able to type in questions and get them answered live by these professionals during the webinar.”

Domolewski says that hundreds of people register for each BCRC webinar, and the audience is broader than farmers and ranchers.

“The webinars are designed for beef producers but they are free to attend and anyone can log on and take part.   Besides beef producers, who are the main audience, we also veterinarians, nutritionists, extension agents and other people involved in the industry that attend.”

The BCRC has eight webinars planned this season, with a variety of topics.

“The one coming up next in November, will be on the upcoming changes to how antibiotics can be purchased.  We also have some on transport and some of the research that’s come up with how to transport cattle safely, as well as nasal vaccines and grazing management.”

“We’ll also have information on water testing and water pumps, and cover crops will be covered this year,” said Domolewski

The schedule for this year is available on the website beefresearch.ca and they try to do at least one webinar month during the fall and winter months – most of them take place at 7:00-pm MST.

“All of the webinars are also recorded – if you register for a webinar you’ll recieve an email that the webinar has taken place and you’ll get a link to re-watch that recording.”
