New buses, theatre rent, and Ireland trip on council agenda

LETHBRIDGE – An update on a $15,000 trip to Ireland, an application for electric buses, and the fate of the Yates Theatre rental fee are all on the agenda for the Monday, Oct. 29 council meeting.

The trip with Nikka Yuko and the Lethbridge Destination Management Organization representatives was a 4-3 decision approved by council in late June.

Brad Hembroff, President of Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden Society, and William Slenders, Executive Director of LDMO, told council an invitation from the Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Garden in Ireland was received unexpectedly and that it could be a great way to link Ireland and the U.K. to Lethbridge through tourists’ affection for visiting garden cities

The group is now expected to provide a report to council.

Transit Manager Kevin Ponech is hoping to submit an application to the new Alberta Community Transit Fund for several fully electric buses and the infrastructure to go with it.

A decision by council on whether to approve more than $23,000 in rental waivers for the Yates Theatre will also be discussed. Representatives from New West Theatre originally asked for more than $48,000 in rental waivers for the 2018-2019 season to mitigate the impact the Yates construction has had and continues to have on the organization.
