Unemployment in region hits 15-month low

LETHBRIDGE – Unemployment in the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region has reached its lowest level since July 2017.

According to Statistics Canada and the Alberta government, the unadjusted three-month moving average unemployment rate in October was 4.1 per cent, down from 4.8 per cent in September. That’s down from a high this year of 6.9 per cent in February.

The rate was by far the lowest of all the provincial regions. Red Deer dropped from 7.2 to 6.3 per cent. Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake declined to 5.5 from 5.9 per cent. Edmonton dropped from 6.5 to 6.2 per cent. Calgary was unchanged at 8.2 per cent.

Areas with increases were Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House/Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River (5.3 per cent, up from 5.2) and Camrose-Drumheller (5.9 per cent, up from 5.2).

The provincial seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate jumped to 7.3 from an even seven per cent. StatsCan said the number jobs decreased only slightly, by 2,700. But there was also an increase in the labour force of 4,400.

Most industries were fairly stable in employment numbers, seasonally adjusted. The only sector to show a noteworthy increase was public administration, while there were declines in manufacturing and professional/scientific/technical jobs.
