Klassen leads Hurricanes to 4-2 win over Hitmen

LETHBRIDGE – A brief two-game slide came to a quick end Friday night, Nov. 9, as the Lethbridge Hurricanes edged the Calgary Hitmen 4-2.

A big reason for the rebound performance was the young man between the pipes for the ‘Canes, Reece Klassen. Through 60 minutes of work, the Cloverdale, B.C. netminder stopped 34 of the Hitmen’s 36 shots, while his team only managed to fire 19 shots the other way.

The greatest shot discrepancy came in the first, during which Lethbridge was outshot 13-4, but still ended the period up 1-0, thanks to a goal from Jadon Joseph.

The second period featured a flurry of activity in just over a seven minute span. It started with the Hitmen tying the score 1-1 at the 7:22 mark, Calen Addison and Alex Cotton quickly responded with a pair to put the Hurricanes back up, then Calgary struck once more to end the frame 3-2.

Lethbridge’s Zachary Cox would put the icing on the cake late in the third with his fourth of the year, to cap the scoring at 4-2.

The fantastic performance from Klassen has to bring some hope to a team that has at times struggled to keep the puck out of their net this season. To this point in the 2018-19 campaign, the Hurricanes have surrendered the fifth highest number of goals against (71) in the WHL, but still sit third in the Central Division standings. The only teams that have given up more – including Calgary (83) – find themselves falling further and further out of the playoff race.

Up next for Lethbridge, in what appears to be a bit of a quirk in the schedule, is a pair of home games against the Edmonton Oil Kings, separated by four days. The first goes Monday night, Nov. 12 at the ENMAX Centre, with the two clubs then returning there on Friday for a rematch.
