High-powered Oil Kings edge Hurricanes 6-4

LETHBRIDGE – Two of the Western Hockey League’s top offences went head-to-head and they didn’t disappoint.

The Edmonton Oil Kings (a league-high 92 goals following the contest) bested the Lethbridge Hurricanes (ranked third with 76 goals) by a 6-4 score Monday night, Nov. 12.

Edmonton opened the scoring just 14 seconds in, and while ‘Canes forward Dylan Cozens would even things up midway through the first, the Oil Kings would re-establish the lead before the opening 20 minutes was done.

It was the Hurricanes who struck early in the second, as Jordy Bellerive picked up his ninth of the season 1:18 into the frame to tie the score 2-2. This time the Oil Kings responded with two goals – one shorthanded and another on the power play – to take a 4-2 lead.

The early scoring trend continued into the third period, this time with Zachary Cox finding the back of the net 53 seconds in. He would score once more, but it was sandwiched between a pair of Edmonton goals to cap the night at 6-4 for the visitors.

The loss continues what has been a somewhat erratic trend for Lethbridge through 18 games this season. To this point, their longest winning streak has been three games, matching their longest losing skid. That’s to say, consistency hasn’t been easy to come by this season. It is worth noting though, that four of the Hurricanes’ losses came in extra time, providing valuable points in the standings. They now have a record of 8-6-2-2.

An oddity of the schedule has the same two teams meeting up again in Lethbridge on Friday at the ENMAX Centre.
