LETHBRIDGE – A joint investigation by Lethbridge Police and Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services has determined the death of a 39-year-old man over the weekend to be non-criminal.

The fire department responded to a fire alarm at the Landmark building along the 500 block of 6 Street South at approximately 4:23 a.m. on Nov. 10.

Fire crews extinguished the fire, which was isolated to one unit, and the body of a man who was later identified as the 39-year-old occupant of the unit was located inside.

Due to extensive smoke, numerous occupants from other units were initially displaced from the building but were able to return to their homes within a few hours.

No other injuries were reported.

Following further investigation, Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services have concluded that the fire was accidental in nature and was caused by the improper use of combustible liquids.

An autopsy was completed Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Medical Examiner’s office in Calgary, and pending toxicology results there is no evidence to suggest foul play and the matter is deemed non-criminal.

Police say since the matter is non-criminal, no further information will be released.
