TABER – Despite a late start, the sugar beet harvest in southern Alberta wrapped up before the cold set in, and the numbers look good.

Alberta Sugar Beet Growers president Arnie Bergen-Henengouwen said producers finished with three or four days to spare. The total beets harvested were 847,000 tonnes with an average of close to 30 tonnes.

“It’s down I think about a tonne and a half from last year, which we kind of expected. We had a little bit of a later start on things. But all-in-all, it’ll still turn out, I think, growers are pretty happy with how it turned out in the end.”

Bergen-Henengouwen said the percentage of extractable sugar is around 17.75 per cent, the second highest ever.
