Canadian Wheat class modernization to reduce segregation of classes

Dec 6, 2018 | 2:19 PM

OTTAWA —  The Canadian Grain Commission says four wheat classes will disappear on July 1st of 2019, to reduce the cost of grain segregation in the commercial handling system.

They include Canada Eastern Red, Hard White Winter, Hard White Spring and Soft White Spring

At the same time, a new wheat class called the Canada Eastern Other Wheat will be created.

The new class will be for varieties with unique characteristics and allow producers to take advantage of special contracted varieties.

The change is expected to reduce grain-handling costs because the four classes will no longer be segregated into the four wheat categories.

Consultations on the Canadian wheat class modernization  began in February of 2015 and continued through 2017, to review the current Canadian wheat classes, maintain the quality and enhance the consistency of Canadian wheat classes to support marketability.

Information received during the consultation found stakeholders supported the need to modernize the eastern wheat classes, which would streamline and simplify the eastern wheat classes. The modernization is also expected to increase system flexibility for producers, breeders, processors and handlers.
