Wishes really do come true! Jenifer Marana, 36, has been dreaming of a Scandinavian-inspired kitchen where she and her husband, Ryan, and their son, Paul, 13, can come together to enjoy meals and have heart to heart conversations. Carefree Kitchens and Lighting is granting this wish with their 9th annual Kitchen Makeover.
For nine years, Carefree Kitchens and Lighting has given away a kitchen makeover worth $15,000 to a special, deserving family. This year they received more than 50 applications, which they narrowed down to 3 finalists. The winner is based on their commitment to community involvement, their personal needs, their family dynamic, and how feasible the reno will be to complete. It was a hard choice, but something about the Marana’s story really spoke to Brad VanderHeide, president of Carefree Kitchens and Lighting, and his team.
Jenifer Marana arrived an immigrant to work at a local hotel in Lethbridge. For three years, her life was work, church, and home; all the while, dreaming of the day when her family could be with her. Then, finally, on February 22nd, 2017 Marana welcomed her husband, Ryan, and son, Paul, to Canada – permanent residency in hand. “It was magical,” Marana said, reliving the moment. “I was hugging them so hard when the snow started to fall from the sky. It was like the heavens were welcoming them here, to Canada.”
They started out in a tiny apartment, and then on July 5th, 2018, they signed a mortgage for their first Canadian home; a small, bi-level condo, which Jenifer says: “is perfect for them, but needs some touch-ups.” For Jenifer, who is an avid cook, the kitchen is the heart of the home where her family can eat together and host friends occasionally. She dreams of a kitchen that is simple and airy, white, with some open space so her family can be near her while she cooks them a hearty meal.
This year, Carefree Kitchens and Lighting is working with Danielle Korthuis from Muse Interior Design & The En-suite. Danielle will help Jenifer with all the details of her renovation, and the rest will be completed by the dedicated team at Carefree Kitchens and Lighting. The Marana’s kitchen makeover will include new cabinets, lighting, counter tops, new tile and appliances, paint and a few other miscellaneous items.
For Jenifer Marana and her family, they really feel like dreams do come true. “If you work hard, pray and believe,” Jenifer says, “then it all works out.”
For Carefree Kitchens and Lighting, VanderHeide said they love being a part of something so special. “We love being able to give back to our community - there is something so special about seeing their gratitude, expression and thankfulness when it’s all complete.”
