LETHBRIDGE – The Lethbridge Public Library is giving away a gift for its 100th birthday.

All Lethbridge Public Library (LPL) memberships will be available for no fee during 2019. The offer is made possible through one-time funding approved by city council as part of the 2019-2022 Operating Budget Monday, Dec. 10.

Normally, a library card carries an annual fee of $15 for adults, $7 for people 60 and over, $25 per family, and no charge for children 17 and under.

Public Library CEO Terra Plato said in a news release that removing the fee removes a barrier for many people who wish to access the library and its services.

“The Lethbridge Public Library is a welcoming, inclusive space that works to connect and strengthen our community through its equitable access to learning and leisure, and this opportunity only reinforces that,” she said.

The cost of removing library fees for the year is $106,000.
