Milk River-based trucking company closes doors

Dec 12, 2018 | 10:45 AM

LETHBRIDGE – A trucking firm headquartered in Milk River has gone out of business.

Callers to Hughson Trucking were informed by a recording that the company has closed. The Hughson Trucking website has been taken down, only providing a phone number to the recording.

“You have reached the general mailbox for Hughson Trucking, Inc.” the recording says. “Unfortunately, we are no longer in business.”

The recording goes on to provide an email address. A message sent to the address was not returned and LethbridgeNewsNOW was unable to contact company owner Justin Hughson.

Staff at the Town of Milk River office confirmed they had heard of the closure but, as for details, all they had were an abundance of rumours and no information about the company closure.

According to the most-recently archived version of the website, the company had locations in Milk River, Red Deer, Calgary, and Sexsmith. There had previously been a Lethbridge location.

The company provided services to the oil and gas, forestry and lumber, agriculture, mining, construction, and food processing industries.

It isn’t known how many employees are affected, however, some of the former employees have spoken with LethbridgeNewsNOW, expressing disappointment and anger at how the situation came about – mere weeks before Christmas.

One employee stated they were upset that the owner(s) did not even “respect their employees enough to meet with them and tell them in person what was about to happen.”

Another employee indicated there was an abundance of rumours which no one would confirm. They were concerned about parking their vehicles near the company building while at work, for fear that the business would be locked down and they would be unable to retrieve their vehicles, if that happened.

Information provided by the employee confirmed the company was no longer in business.  They indicated employees had received a package about two weeks ago, which stated they had the option of taking employment with Tri-Line Carriers, a trucking company just outside of Calgary. Some have taken the offer, however, it isn’t known how many drivers they have absorbed or how many office staff are impacted.
