LUNDBRECK – Strong winds have shut down Highway 22, with multiple collisions reported Thursday, Dec. 13.

511 Alberta reports the highway is shut down completely from the Highway 3 junction to Highway 533 at Chain Lakes Provincial Park. At least one semi is reported to have rolled over.

In addition, Fort Macleod area was reporting wind gusts of up to 133 km/h, with several rollovers and jackknifed semis. Travel was not recommended for larger vehicles.

A wind warning remained in effect for areas west of Lethbridge, with gusts up to 130 km/h expected. Wind gusts were expected to diminish later on Thursday, but potentially pick up again on Friday.

Complicating matters, the wind warning signage is not functioning due to technical issues. Drivers should not assume that because there is no warning message on the signs, that conditions are safe for travel.
