LETHBRIDGE —  The Canes won what turned out to be a penalty filled game, which saw major infractions at the beginning of both the first and second periods.

Barely two minutes into Saturday night’s game at the Enmax, the Blazers were first on the scoreboard, making it 1-0. Three minutes later, the penalties began and came at regular intervals. The Canes’ Nolan Jones and the Blazers’ Montana Onyebuchi were each cited five-minute majors for fighting.

Exactly one minute later the Canes’ Jake Leschyshyn planted his 21st of the season and tied the game 1-1, assisted by Nick Henry and Jordy Bellerive.

As the puck went sailing through the pipes, four players also racked-up penalties — the Blazers’ Ryley Appelt and Travis Walton and the Canes’ Calen Addison and Koletrane Wilson.

Mid-way through the frame, Jordy Bellerive netted his 14 of the season on a power play, assisted by Calen Addison and Jake Lescjyshyn. The score was 2-1 for the Canes, which is where the score remained at the end of the first, aside from the Blazers adding two more penalties

Initial action in the second period came just two minutes in, as the Canes’ Koletrane Wilson and the Blazers’ Jermaine Loewen dropped their gloves and went at it. They were both assessed five-minute majors for fighting.

The lone goal of the period came on a power play at 13:34, off the stick of Connor Zary, taking the game to a 2-2 tie.

The third period belonged to the Hurricanes as they added goals at regular intervals. Less than five minutes in, Dylan Cozens tallied his 17th goal of the season, assisted by Jake Elmer and Taylor Ross. It put the home team ahead 3-2.

At the mid-way point of the period, the same trio were in action again.  This time, it was Taylor Ross with the goal, assisted by Jake Elmer and Dylan Cozens – and the Hurricanes was up 4-2.

The final goal of the game came with 90 seconds remaining.  Nick Henry took advantage of the Blazers’ empty net, giving the Canes a 5-2 win and a record of 17-9-4-2.

The Hurricanes’ net game is Sunday (Dec 16) at 4:00, when they travel to Calgary to play the Hitmen.
