Hurricanes chart 6-4 win over the Hitmen in Calgary

CALGARY —  The Hurricanes wrapped up their final game before the Christmas break on a positive note –  a 6-4 win against the Hitmen in Calgary.

The first period got off to a punch start as nine seconds in from puck drop, Taylor Ross tossed one into the Hitmen net off an assist from Dylan Cozens.  

Other than a couple of minor penalties for the Canes, the first period came to an end with team leading 1-0.

If the first period belonged to the Canes, I was the Hitmen who took control of the second. Calgary’s Mark Katelic tied the game two minutes in. Then, four minutes later, The Canes Jake Elmer and the Hitmen’s Jackson van de Leest dropped the gloves and went after each other, resulting in a five-minute major for the pair.

Calgary’s Bryce Bader put one through the pipes at 8:33, giving the Hitmen a short-lived 2-1 lead.  Just two minutes later, Canes Captain Jordy Bellerive took advantage of a power play to plant his 15th goal of the season and tied the came 2-2. But, after another two-minute interval, the Hitmen returned the action of a power play, putting their team ahead 3-2.

The final 20 minutes offered a flurry of action and produced fully half of the game’s goals. The first came at 5:29 as Dylan Cozens again tied the game at 3-3, off an assist from Calen Addison.

The Hitmen produced their final goal of the game at 8:25, giving Calgary a 4-3 lead which would be short-lived.  Twenty seconds later, Tyler Prefontaine added a goal, with the assist coming from Nick Henry and Jordy Bellerive.  After a one-minute interval, is was Lethbridge’s Logan Barlage hitting the Hitmen net and taking thee score to 5-4 for the Canes.

The scoring didn’t end there.  With just over a minute remaining in the game, Jordy Bellerive added his second goal of the game, with the assist from Nick Henry and Ty Prefontaine.

The Canes’ 6-4 win takes their record to 18-9-4-2.  The team’s next game is on December 28, when the Canes host Victoria.
