WATCH: M.D. of Taber Regional Fire Service gets into the holiday spirit with YouTube dance video

LETHBRIDGE – If you’re trying to get into the holiday spirit (and maybe have a have a few laughs), the M.D. of Taber Fire Service can help with that.

Over the course of just a few days, the department taped a Christmas video that’s now on YouTube.

The five- minute production begins with a “call for service” for Station 4 and Station 7 department members, and then shows two trucks pulling out of a garage, sirens on.

The music and dancing then begin with the firefighters from the two departments in either their uniforms or full gear inside one of the halls and outside at an unspecified location.

Jenna Kempe, of “Zumba with Jenna,” choreographed the dancing. She tells LNN it was a lot of fun for everyone, even if a few people had two left feet.

“I haven’t watched it (the video) yet, but I’m excited to see how it all came together. The one gentleman who was doing all the recording, he only had a little bit of time to do it, but I can’t wait to watch.  It was so fun to do it.”

Former firefighter Kevin O’Grady, whose daughter is a volunteer member of the department, came up with the idea to put smiles on people’s faces during the holidays. He approached the Fire Chief about it, and it took off from there.

“Most people don’t know that Christmas time can be tough. They’re (firefighters) and are called upon in the middle of the night, or just sitting down to dinner and they have to go out.

“Everybody leaves all of a sudden for a fire call. So those are the things most people don’t realize these guys do. And this is the fun side what these guys get to do. Putting a smile on everyone’s face. That’s the main goal. And making sure everyone’s safe.”

The video, O’Grady adds, is also a kind of challenge to other local departments (including Lethbridge, where his son is a firefighter), to see if they can come up with a creative way of saying “Merry Christmas” and “Happy Holidays.”

“These guys and girls did a fantastic job with the time they had….it would be neat to see if other businesses and stuff to say ‘hey, you know what? Let’s do something different, let’s do a Christmas wish to everybody,’ instead of just sending a card. And it would be interesting to see if other fire departments try doing the same thing.”
