LETHBRIDGE – A defensive battle through 40 minutes of play turned into a shootout in the 3rd period on Saturday, Jan. 12, at the ENMAX Centre that saw the Lethbridge Hurricanes score three consecutive goals to defeat the Kootenay Ice 3-2.

Early on in the 1st period the Hurricanes would find themselves in penalty trouble but would kill three straight penalties in the frame.

After the 1st period, Lethbridge and Kootenay were scoreless with the shots on goal favouring the Hurricanes 10-6.

Saturday’s game was a rematch of Wednesday’s matchup between the two teams, including both starting goaltenders from that game back in net as Carl Tetachuk got the start for Lethbridge while Jesse Makaj was manning the crease for the Ice.

The 2nd period would remain scoreless, though not for a lack of trying by Kootenay as they made Tetachuk work outshooting Lethbridge 20-8 in the middle frame.

Early in the 3rd period, it would be the Ice drying first blood when Kootenay forward Peyton Krebs beat Tetachuk to make it 1-0 at 3:08.

That lead wouldn’t last long, as at 5:23 off a faceoff Logan Barlage tied the game up at 1-1.

Near the midway point of the 3rd, the Hurricanes would take their first lead of the night when Dylan Cozens put home a rebound shot off of a shot from the point by Koletrane Wilson to make it 2-1 for Lethbridge.

There was a bit of late-game intrigue when captain Jordy Bellerive buried an empty netter to make it 3-1 with less than two minutes to go in the game, but the Ice responded. Following a Nick Henry slashing penalty, Ice forward Brandon Machado on the powerplay to cut the deficit to 3-2 but that’s as far as Kootenay would come.

Lethbridge and Kootenay finished the game tied in shots, with 31 apiece, and the Hurricanes went 0-for-3 on the powerplay while the Ice went 1-for-5.

It was the second quality start of the season for Tetachuk, who made 29 saves in picking up his 9th win of the season.

Lethbridge’s record improves to 23-11-4-4 with the win, and the team remains in 1st place in the Central Division.

The Hurricanes will complete the three-game in three-day schedule tomorrow afternoon up in Edmonton against the Oil Kings.
