Hurricanes suffer second loss to Edmonton in three days

EDMONTON –– The Edmonton Oil Kings owned the first two periods of the Sunday Jan 13) game in which they hosted the Hurricanes., in a penalty laden match.

Liam Keeler opened scoring at 11:43.   In spite of a delay-of-game penalty against the home team, the Canes were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.  Three minutes later, Keeler lobbed in another goal, giving the Oil Kings a 2-0 lead. The period ended with Edmonton leading 11-8 in shots-on-goal.

The second frame produced a single goal but, the bulk of the game’s penalties.  Just three minutes in, the Canes’ Scott Mahovlic and the Oil Kings’ Aidan Lawson were assessed a five-minute major for fighting.  At 5:41, Edmonton’s Vince Loschiavo produced the period’s lone goal, providing his team with a 3-0 lead. After 40-minutes of play, Edmonton led shots-on-goal 25-17.

The final 20 minutes of play saw Edmonton’s Trey Fix-Wolansky add a power-play shot just three minutes in, brining the score to 4-0.

Fortunately, the Canes’ Jake Elmer was able to put a stop the shut out a 8:02, off an assist from Dylan Cozens and Nick Henry.

By the end of the game, shots-on-goal had evened out Oil Kings 33 to the Canes’ 32. Both teams were 1/5 on the power play.

The loss tipped the Canes’ out of their lead in the Central division, as they now stand ag 23-12-4-4.

The Cane’s next home game is on Friday (Jan 18) when they host Red Deer.
